London’s shabby glamour week…We love xx

Voluminous chignons, french twists, and bouffants piled so high they tested gravity were everywhere during New York Fashion Week. Much like the ponytails above, these updos were also messy and slightly unkempt.

The over-the-top hairstyles seen in runway shows such as Bottega Veneta (pictured above) channel Amy Winehouse and Mad Men at the same time. While the runway version is probably not practical for everyday, a softer version of these big updos would be perfect for a date night.

London Fashion Week: The Hair, The Makeup, The Trends!

London Fashion Week February 2010

London Fashion Week was a theatrical display, from the dark and disturbing to the bright and whimsical, the mantra seemed to be €˜anything goes.€™ The collections blended high-fashion with a heavy street-chic vibe – from the slogan tee’s and bags, to booties paired with everything, to leggings (yup, they’re still going strong!), to the cropped motorcycle jackets, to the structured blazers. Perhaps inspired by the funky, eccentric style of London’s golden child, Agyness Deyn, the styles spoke to the fashionista who marches to the beat of her own drum.

Adding to the eclectic blend of themes and trends were the bold and funky accessories (most notably the over-the-top head pieces) and dramatic hair and makeup. A crazy little thing like cold weather had no bearing on the shoes- which in included a range of peep-toe booties and open-toe strappy sandals, as well as more fall-friendly styles like boots- from ankle, to knee-length, to thigh-high.

Just like the clothes, the hair and makeup looks spanned from two extremes- some collections featured bare-faced models sporting eternally sexy bed-head coifs, others went to polished glamorous looks achieved with red lips and sleek polished hair, while others went wild for the hair products, teasing the hair to get as much poof as possible and faces so pale with lips so dark, the models almost looked like ghouls. It was all in good fun, and overall, the London shows can best be summed up as wacky, weird, and wonderful.

Weird but true hair tip from Toni&Guy at London Fashion Week 2011

Toni & Guy International Artistic Director Bill Watson, shares an insider tip from backstage at the Dans la Vie show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout

OK, not the most glamorous of tools, but toilet paper is a serious hair saviour when it’s frantic backstage. Simply wrap around your head whilst getting ready, it will stop your freshly styled ‘do looking anything other than perfect and is light enough not to leave any telling marks. Just don’t forget to take it off!

The ponytail buzz!!!

If you’ve been keeping an eye on this seasons catwalk beauty at London Fashion Week, you can’t have helped but notice that ponytails have had a massive presence at the AW11 shows.

In London (and New York actually, Marc Jacobs chose ponytails for his show too) at Felder Felder, Antonio Berardi, Jaeger, Jean Pierre Bragana, and even under the headdresses at Ashley Isham, models all sported sleek ponytails in different lengths and heights, from tightly pulled back ponies on top of the head, to low, loose (a lot more comfortable looking) styles.

If you want to recreate the look (and let’s face it, recreating the beauty’s going to be a lot more affordable then recreating the outfits), check after the cut for our guide on everything you’ll need (as observed by us during our backstage sessions).
